U.S. Titles Headline Venice 2013 Slate

Joe

Toronto unveiled its initial slate a few days ago, and it’s now Venice’s turn to reveal a ridiculously stacked program of auteur cinema for its 2013 edition. Among a very strong Competition lineup, U.S. cinema is strongly represented by John Curran’s outback epic Tracks, James Franco’s Cormac McCarthy adaptation Child of God, Terry Gilliam’s surreal futuristic drama The Zero Theorem, David Gordon Green’s Southern-set drama Joe, Errol Morris’ enticing The Unknown Known: the Life and Times of Donald Rumsfeld, Kelly Reichardt’s environmental activist drama Night Moves and Peter Landesman’s JFK assassination drama Parkland. Elsewhere in that section there are also new offerings from Xavier Dolan, Philippe Garrel, Stephen Frears, Amos Gitai, Jonathan Glazer, Hayao Miyazaki and Tsai Ming-liang.

The rest of the program is also generously populated by the latest works by prominent figures in world cinema, for example Kim Ki-duk, Andrzej Wajda, Sion Sono and Lukas Moodysson; there are additionally a few curiosities, such as Je m’appelle Hmmm…a doc directed by fashion desibner Agnes B. and Locke, a real-time thriller starring Tom Hardy directed by Eastern Promises scribe Steven Knight. Beyond the realm of the Competition, there are also a handful more U.S. titles: Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity and Paul Schrader’s The Canyons have Out of Competition slots on the narrative side, the Out of Competition doc slate features Alex Gibney’s Lance Armstrong film The Armstrong Lie and Frederick Wiseman’s latest, At Berkeley, and Horizons has Palo Alto, the debut from Francis Ford Coppola’s granddaughter Gia Coppola, and Ti West’s new horror flick, The Sacrament.
