ART HOUSE IS YOUR HOUSE
PERHAPS AS A PALLIATIVE to another depressing summer movie season, the Criterion Collection has released a slew of DVDs designed to highlight the cineastes home theater calendar. Best of the lot: Luis Buñuels Diary of a Chambermaid, Ingmar Bergmans Cries and Whispers, two Douglas Sirk features the sublimely hysterical Written on the Wind and All that Heaven Allows, the latter packaged with a pictorial essay by Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Michelangelo Antonionis classic tale of stylish ennui, LAvventura. The Antonioni gets the two-disk deluxe treatment Criterion reserves for pics like Armageddon: it includes essays by the Italian master read by Jack Nicholson and a Canadian TV doc from the 1960s containing fascinating footage from his sets.
