For the second year IFP is collaborating with the United Nation's Department of Public Information to present ENVISION - a forum uniting the filmmaking community, civil society organizations, activists, journalists, public policy makers, NGOs, and the general public in the shared goal of envisioning a better world for all and achieving impact through media. The Spotlight Focus in 2010 from the UN's Millennium Development Goals is the goal of universal education. Screenings of Jennifer Arnold's A Small Act (HBO Documentaries) and Davis Guggenheim's Waiting for Superman (Paramount Vantage) will be accompanied by discussions on challenges to achieving education globally, the impact of individual action and philanthropy, and current issues around the U.S. education crisis. Based on the true story of Joe and Sally Conforte, a couple who owned the first legal brothel in Nevada, Love Ranch, directed by Taylor Hackford, stars Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci as the couple (under different names), whose entrepreneurial success is tested by accusations of infidelity and shady criminal dealings. Matters only get worse when a young boxer is brought to Reno to be promoted by Joe in a series of fights, and the couple's allegiance to each other is in jeopardy.
THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY OF PHIL SPECTOR
Celebrated pop music producer Phil Spector is now serving 19 years to life for the shooting death of actress Lana Clarkson. The Agony and the Ecstasy of Phil Spector, directed by Vikram Jayanti, originally aired as a special on the BBC, with Spector giving an exclusive interview after refusing to speak to the media for years. The film both discusses the murder case and his legacy in music.
THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE
The second book in the successful Millennium trilogy by Stieg Larsson, The Girl Who Played with Fire, directed by Daniel Alfredson, continues in the action/spy adventures of Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace), the post-punk action heroine with a complicated past, and Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist), the journalist with a thirst for the truth. After having solved a decades-long disappearance and cracking a serial killer, it seems like things are settling to normal. But Salander is accused of the murder of a couple, and Blomqvist acts quickly to save her before she gets put away for life. With the unforgettable performances of Rapace as Salander, it puts even more pressure on the actors who will eventually sign on for the much awaited American version of the trilogy.
