The Oscars are this weekend, and, as we do every year, we've created an Oscar section that includes all the articles from the print magazine and online about the nominees. Several are already up, and the remainder will be on the site by Sunday. We just posted today one of the best articles from our Fall 2010 issue -- Kramer vs. Kramer director Robert Benton interviewing Blue Valentine's Derek Cianfrance. At the end of the piece, Cianfrance asks Benton a question about career longetivity, and it's beautiful advice for all young filmmakers. Read it -- or bookmark it -- now. Earlier in the week we posted our Spring cover story on Debra Granik, nominated for her Winter's Bone. It's a very candid conversation about everything from having your financing fall apart at the last minute to respecting the communities you film in. Tomorrow visit the site for my interview with Darren Aronofsky about Black Swan.
Elsewhere on the site, after a brief hiatus "The Microbudget Conversation" returns, this week with a post about the challenge of realizing good sound on a low budget. In our Video section, Cedar Rapids director Miguel Arteta gives good advice for anyone thinking about directing a comedy. Enjoy the Oscars -- and the Spirit Awards -- and see you next week. Directed by Xavier Dolan (I Killed My Mother), Heartbeats is a contemporary look at love and friendship which follows three young people in Montreal involved in a love triangle. Francis (Dolan) and Mary (Monia Cokri), a gay man and a straight woman, have always been the best of friends. When they meet Nick (Niels Schneider) at a party, his dreamy beauty and flirtatiousness cause them both to lust for him. Eventually their crushes lead to jealousy between the two friends. "Basically what I was trying to tell people through this film is how shallow we can be in love," says Dolan in this week's Director Interview. Read our interview with Dolan below.
OF GODS AND MEN
Based on the story about the deaths of seven French Trappist monks in 1996 Algeria, Of Gods and Men, directed by Xavier Beauvois (Don't Forget You're Going to Die), takes us into the monastery of Tibhirine, where these monks live in harmony amongst their Muslim brethren. During the Algerian Civil War of the 1990s, the monks were kidnapped and found dead two months later. While their deaths were originally attributed to the Armed Islamic Group, reports uncovered that they may have accidentally been killed by the Algerian army in a failed rescue attempt. The film, which stars Lambert Wilson and Michael Lonsdale, won the Ecumenical Jury Prize at Cannes and has been nominated for Best Foreign Film at this weekend's Independent Spirit Awards.
This week on the blog, Zachary Wigon defends elitist film critics; Kanye West's new video is an homage (or just lift) of Gaspar Noe's Enter the Void (pictured left); the lineup for New Directors/New Film is announced; and MoMA's Documentary Fortnight is running this week. By Damon SmithA stylized depiction of hopelessly "imaginary" love, Xavier Dolan's sophomore feature Heartbeats (which also premiered at Cannes) trails a pair of close friends -- witty, Audrey Hepburn manque Marie (Monia Chokri) and sweet-faced Francis (Dolan) -- who simultaneously crush out on tousle-haired Nicolas (Niels Schneider), a dreamy new acquaintance whose Adonis-like physical beauty and bedroom-ready manner drive them into a passive-aggressive rivalry for his affection. read more MARCH Seattle International Film Festival FutureWave Submission Deadline: March 1 Festival Dates: May 19-June 12 Indianapolis International Film Festival Regular Deadline: March 1 Late Deadline: March 15 Festival Dates: July 14-24 VisionFest Late Deadline: March 1.
