Editor's Note
We're at work on our Summer edition, it's sweltering outside, and I'm finding it hard to focus on blog posts, my Twitter feed and keeping up with fests like BAMcinemaFest and Northside when there's so much work on the print magazine to do. Summer is our 25 New Faces issue, so in addition to writing and editing there's a lot more viewing on our plate as well. As soon as we go to press I'll write something for the blog on our selection criteria this year, but for now, I'm going to leave you with a few links related to stuff going on this week and get back to work.

  1. Bill and Turner Ross's Tchoupitoulas and Benh Zeitlin's Beasts of the Southern Wild both play BAMcinemafest tonight, and here's Alicia Van Couvering meditating on the New Orleans of these two films, which share the same producing team.
  2. Last night I hosted the New York premiere of Andrew Neel's King Kelly, as part of the Northside Festival. Here I talk to Neel and actress Louisa Krause about making a film in which the actress is the camera operator.
  3. It's POV's 25th Anniversary, and Nick Dawson has put together a conversation on documentary by two filmmakers associated with the program: Jennifer Fox and Cristina Ibarra. It's a great dialogue touching on many issues, including the role of women in documentary film. Here is part one.
  4. Keith Miller's highly recommended Welcome to Pine Hill plays BAMcinemaFest Saturday. Here's my video interview with Miller.
  5. Nick Rombes' "Blue Velvet Project" remains one of the most amazing things on our site. Nick dedicates his latest post to the late film critic Andrew Sarris with a discussion of auteur theory and interior meaning.

THE INVISIBLE WAR By Michael Tully

There are "important" movies, and then there is The Invisible War. Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering's investigative documentary about sexual abuse in the American military exposes a heretofore under-reported systematic horror show of unfathomable proportions. To watch it as an innocent civilian is to admit compliance in a crime that you didn't even know had been committed (and now multiply that concept by hundreds). While it cannot be argued that this stands firmly as an example of agenda-based filmmaking, considering the agenda on display, it comes off as an act of outright bravery. I dare the most stubborn, staunchest defenders of so-called "American values" and the American military to watch The Invisible War and not demand that something be changed. This issue isn't a red/blue or male/female or pro-military/anti-military one. It's a human one. And it's f**king infuriating.

New In Theaters
TO ROME WITH LOVE Woody Allen's To Rome with Love explores the disparate misadventures of a group of people in the Italian capital. For the first time in six years, Allen steps in front of the camera for this promising ensemble comedy. To Rome with Love features an incredible cast including Penelope Cruz, Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page, Roberto Benigni, Greta Gerwig, Judy Davis and Alec Baldwin.
KUMARE Vikram Gandhi's Kumare follows the titular Indian Guru whom, unbeknownst to his devoted followers, is actually a filmmaker from New Jersey. Director/actor Gandhi's antics have already been compared to those of Sacha Baron Cohen's. However, Kumare promises to be something quite different from the latter's work: a humorous and enlightening portrayal of religion and identity. THE INVISIBLE WAR The Invisible War investigates the rape epidemic within the U.S. Military. Kirby Dick's film features interviews with female victims whose likelihood of being sexual harassed is said to exceed their chances of being killed in combat. Dick's expose has been described as one of the most scathing indictments of the U.S. Military.

To mark the 25th season of POV (which kicks off tonight), Filmmaker organized a conversation between two of the PBS doc series' alums, Jennifer Fox and Cristina Ibarra, which we've been running all week on the site. At the end of a wide-ranging discussion, the topic of women in film came up, and specifically the huge disparity between the numbers of men and women working in the industry today. Fox -- whose movie My Reincarnation opens the POV anniversary season tonight -- had strong, impassioned words about her feelings on the situation. Read more
