Magnolia Pictures Gets U.S. Rights To Bob Marley Doc, Out 4/20

Magnolia Pictures has obtained the U.S. rights to Marley, the first documentary made with familial support about legendary reggae artist Bob Marley. The film is set to be released April 20 and will make its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. Sewn together by rare footage, archival photos and interviews with family and friends, Marley--directed by Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland)--will make its North American premiere at South by Southwest this coming March.

Eamonn Bowles, president of Magnolia, said it's the documentary that Marley deserves. He went on to praise Macdonald and called his work "eye-opening," "entertaining" and "beautifully crafted." Ziggy Marley, one of Bob's sons and co-executive producer of the film, said, "The family is proud to be able to have the world finally experience this emotional journey." For a cultural figure who's attained near-mythical status, I'm definitely curious to see how a definitive Marley documentary will play out. [Billboard]
