Fall festival season means trailers are dropping at an ever quickening pace, and here’s one that was recently announced as a TIFF premiere, Lenny Abrahamson’s Frank follow-up, Room. Based on the novel by Emma Donoghue, Room stars Brie Larson as a woman who raises her child in captivity after having been kidnapped at a young age. A24 will release the film on October 16.
by Sarah Salovaara on Jul 30, 2015Originally a spec script from Bridesmaids co-writer Annie Mumolo, Joy received a top to bottom rewrite from David O. Russell before production, and the results appear to be somewhat darker than his last two screwball jabs, American Hustle and The Silver Linings Playbook. In any event, here is your first look at the rags to riches tale of Joy Mangano, inventor of the Miracle Mop, as played by Russell regular Jennifer Lawrence.
by Sarah Salovaara on Jul 15, 2015Last seen as the source of much squabbling in the Sony hacks, here is the first official look at Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs, starring Michael Fassbender. Sorkin, who scripted, seems to be giving the late entrepreneur a similar treatment to his handling of Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network, painting Jobs as a ruthless CEO. Steve Wozniak, who is portrayed by Seth Rogen in the film, has already weighed in, claiming “[he feels] a lot of the real Jobs in the trailer, although a bit exaggerated.” It opens October 9.
by Sarah Salovaara on Jul 2, 2015Receiving its theatrical release 41 years after its completion, Les Blank’s A Poem Is A Naked Person is set to open at New York’s Film Forum on July 1, following its bows at BAMcinemaFest and SXSW. A portrait of singer-songwriter Leon Russell shot between 1972 and 1974, the film was the result of considerable release delays as a result of music clearance issues and creative differences between Blank and Russell. Check out the trailer above.
by Sarah Salovaara on Jun 17, 2015Just announced as the Opening Night film of the New York Film Festival, Robert Zemeckis’ The Walk dramatizes Philippe Petit’s 1971 high wire balancing act between the Twin Towers. Staring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Petit, The Walk was described by NYFF festival director Kent Jones as “a classic heist movie in the tradition of The Asphalt Jungle or Bob le flambeur” but with access in lieu of money as the objective. The Walk is set to open (in IMAX) worldwide in October.
by Sarah Salovaara on Jun 4, 2015It’s hard to nail a trailer for a satire that stars such a gratingly self-obsessed character as Greta Gerwig’s Brooke in Mistress America, and this first look from Fox Searchlight sells Baumbach’s latest film as far more ‘quirky’ than it actually is. After seeing it at Sundance, I found it to be a rather clever, entertaining critique of the half-hearted do-it-all millennial ethos, so you can expect much more out of the screwball comedy than this teaser suggests. Mistress America will be released in theaters August 14.
by Sarah Salovaara on Jun 3, 2015Here’s the first trailer for James Ponsoldt’s David Foster Wallace biopic, The End of the Tour, which picked up several nice notices out of Sundance, if not from his family and literary estate. Starring Jason Segel as Wallace and Jesse Eisenberg as the Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky, the two-hander winds through a leg of the former’s book tour for Infinite Jest. A24 will release the film on July 31.
by Sarah Salovaara on May 27, 2015In our current print issue, Approaching the Elephant director Amanda Wilder interviews Crystal Moselle about her Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner The Wolfpack, and how she went about navigating the reclusive existence of the Lower East Side Angulo brothers. You can check out the first trailer, which displays a head-scratching R rating from the MPAA, above. Magnolia Pictures will release the film on June 12.
by Sarah Salovaara on May 13, 2015Sean Baker’s Tangerine went into Sundance with two secrets of sorts kept firmly under wraps. Festival materials noticeably left off that the film starred two transgender actresses and — the eventually headline grabbing news — that it was shot on an iPhone 5S. The first red band trailer gives you a square look at both starring components, as the added graphics and musical effects play its kitschy style to the hilt. An episodic comedy about a jilted prostitute on the hunt for her pimp, Tangerine is set for release by Magnolia on July 10.
by Sarah Salovaara on Apr 30, 2015Still one of my Sundance highlights, Andrew Bujalski’s Results is nearing theaters on May 29. An off-kilter, comedic take on the love triangle, Results concerns two trainers (Cobie Smulders and Guy Pearce) and their wealthy new client (Kevin Corrigan). You can check out my take from Sundance here, and Vadim Rizov will have an interview with Bujalski in the Spring issue.
