The trailer is both gorgeous and slightly perplexing — and after Mike Cahill’s Another Earth, seems to be continuing a trend of arthouse psychological planet movies. In truth, I can’t wait for this this new, presumably Cannes-bound pic from Lars Von Trier. Melancholia from Zentropa on Vimeo.
by Scott Macaulay on Apr 8, 2011James Gunn’s Super is a demented real-life superhero action picture with a committed, out-there performance by Ellen Page and an engaging, improbably heartfelt one by Rainn Wilson. The film receives its U.S. premiere at SXSW and opens a few weeks later from IFC. Check out the trailer.

by Scott Macaulay on Feb 26, 2011AICN thinks this trailer for the zombie game Dead Island might be better than most movie trailers, and I tend to agree. More Dead Island Videos
by Scott Macaulay on Feb 16, 2011At Hollywood Elsewhere, Jeff Wells picks up on the character mystery suggested by Arthur‘s trailer, i.e., has Liza Minelli’s role of “Linda Marolla,” played in the remake by Greta Gerwig, really been demoted to not much more than a cameo? Or are Russell Brand, conspicuous consumption, and arch repartee with Helen Mirren (in the John Gielgud) role that much easier to market than Gerwig’s rising star? And, oh yeah, the original had something to do with drinking…. (By the way, can we put a moratorium on the use of “Under Pressure” in movies and movie trailers?)
by Scott Macaulay on Feb 12, 2011270 of this year’s movies, mashed up into one eye-popping trailer of cinematic uplift. Kudos to Gen I., who writes, “This year’s movies have legitimately transformed my idea of what is creatively possible.” Make sure to note the mid-clip David Lynch appearance and, later, the Lena Dunham/Alex Karpovsky fist bump. Here’s also a list of all the films used. (Hat tip: Kottke.org.)
by Scott Macaulay on Dec 15, 2010Coming in over the transom is this trailer for I Like You, a film by Jamie Heinrich. Heinrich hails from Reno, Nevada, and, based on this trailer, the self-described micro-budget film boasts some pretty striking cinematography and a good deal of heart. A few sites seem to have been given an early look. From Todd Brown at Twitch: The sort of naturalistic indie drama that Gus Van Sant and Larry Clark got their start with, I Like You is the feature debut not only of director / editor Heinrich and star Benna but also, seemingly, of just about everybody else […]
by Scott Macaulay on Nov 27, 2010Writer/director Michael Bilandic forwarded me this trailer for “a low-budget rave comedy executive produced by Abel Ferrara.” He writes, “It’s about a thirty-something owner of a struggling all-techno music record store who, in a last ditch effort to save his place, attempts to throw an ‘old school’ rave. It stars the comedian Tom McCaffrey and features Matt Pinfield! Cinematography by Sean Williams (Frownland, Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo).” Check out the trailer below.
by Scott Macaulay on Aug 2, 2010On my list to see if Catherine Breillat’s Bluebeard, in which the iconoclastic French director takes on the classic tale from the point of view of two modern-day young girls. It opens today at the IFC Center. The trailer is below.
by Scott Macaulay on Mar 26, 2010It’ not everyday that I can stream in its entirety a new film by Jean-Luc Godard on the website. Okay, I don’t know for sure that the teaser trailer for Godard’s forthcoming Socialism is the whole film, albeit sped-up, but I imagine it is. From a blog called Radio Deleuze comes what seems to be a synopsis: A symphony in three movements. Things such as: The Mediterranean, a cruise ship. Numerous conversations, in numerous languages, between the passengers, almost all of whom are on holiday… An old man, a war criminal (German, French, American we don?t know) accompanied by his […]
