In the near future, Canada has passed a new law allowing parents to simply drop their children off for adoption by the state whenever their patience has been tried too high. Against this backdrop, mother Diane (Anne Dorval) struggles to raise her unstable, sometimes violent son Steve (Antoine-Oliver Pilon). Coming full circle from his debut I Killed My Mother, Québécois wunderkind Xavier Dolan’s fifth feature is an intensely emotional look at the bond between mother and son, almost entirely shot in a new, Vine-esque aspect ratio of 1:1.
