The Lovers
Azazel Jacobs’s The Lovers finds Tracy Letts’s character falling back in love with his wife (Debra Winger) on the eve of their breakup. Hunched-over and beaten down, Letts’s no-vanity performance sees him sinking into unattractive dejection before rebounding into infatuation — the perfect counterpoint to Winger’s long-overdue return to lead roles. Returning to movies after two seasons of HBO’s Doll & Em, Jacobs steps up his game with an ambitious and unusual take on the comedy of remarriage.
