Drawing on his own musical background, Damien Chazelle’s music-minded follow-up to debut feature Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench tracks the sadomasochistic spark between teacher Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons) and aspiring jazz drummer Andrew Neyman (Miles Teller). Talented and willing to push himself, Andrew doesn’t initially realize the depths of his mentor’s harsh obsessiveness and how unhealthy that could be. When does hard work becomes self-defeating, and when does tough love curdle into abuse? Chazelle’s acclaimed drama is a tense two-hander about two people who may deserve each other.
