God Help the Girl

James (Olly Alexander) is an Englishman living in Glasgow who imagines he knows the city better than actual Scots, Eve (Emily Browning) is a transplanted Australian recovering from treatment for anorexia, and Cass (Hannah Murray) is a rich English girl who takes music lessons from them both. What all three have in common is a shared love for and desire to write classic pop songs. Forming a band is the easy part, but a not-quite love story between James and Eve threatens to derail their fragile project. Belle and Sebastian ringleader Stuart Murdoch makes his feature debut with this very lovable musical, shot on 16mm with a terrific original score from its director/writer. God Help the Girl is a musical for anyone obsessed with the idea of the perfect pop song, the Belle and Sebastian manifestation of same, or any non-fans generally good-spirited update of the musical genre that’s equal parts singing, comedy and deeply felt emotion.
