Ingrid Veninger’s latest film has to be the fastest movie ever made for TIFF. The Toronto filmmaker was on her way to unspool her 2010 feature, Modra, at film fests across Europe when she seized the opportunity to shoot an entirely new film. That meant 19 days of scripting, casting and rehearsals in Toronto in March this year, 13 days shooting in north England, Paris and Berlin, then wrapping with five weeks of post in T.O. to make the TIFF deadline. That also meant Veninger presenting Modra in one cinema and then becoming “Ruby White,” who was premiering a fictitious […]

Filmmaker: How did you first conceive of the character of Jimmy? Did you always intend to play him yourself? D’Elia: Like American Animal‘s lead character, Jimmy, I was also very ill in […]
by Brandon Harris on Mar 16, 2011Writer-director Greg Mottola won himself a lot of fans with his smart, witty debut movie The Daytrippers, and then promptly disappeared from the indie scene for the best part of a decade, working in television while he tried to get his sophomore feature off the ground. In 2007, he returned to the big screen fray with Superbad, the Judd Apatow-produced teen comedy, which was a number one box office hit and made him a hot commodity once again. Going back to his indie roots, Mottola followed up the success of Superbad with Adventureland, a beautifully nuanced coming-of-age dramedy about a […]
by Nick Dawson on Mar 13, 2011At Hollywood Elsewhere, Jeff Wells picks up on the character mystery suggested by Arthur‘s trailer, i.e., has Liza Minelli’s role of “Linda Marolla,” played in the remake by Greta Gerwig, really been demoted to not much more than a cameo? Or are Russell Brand, conspicuous consumption, and arch repartee with Helen Mirren (in the John Gielgud) role that much easier to market than Gerwig’s rising star? And, oh yeah, the original had something to do with drinking…. (By the way, can we put a moratorium on the use of “Under Pressure” in movies and movie trailers?)
by Scott Macaulay on Feb 12, 2011The folks who comprise Human Giant have come up with a very funny short, below, that takes a Clerks-style approach to the indie music scene and which sets its story at my favorite music store, Other Music. My only quibble with the short is that its take on the Other Music clerks is fairly off — they’re actually pretty nice guys. On the other hand, I guess I’ve never asked for the Garden State soundtrack.
