SEAN MCMANUS, JOSH WELSH PROMOTED TO FIND CO-PRESIDENTS
Congratulations to long-time staff members Sean McManus and Josh Welsh for their appointment today as Co-Presidents of Film Independent. Independent filmmakers know both men well as McManus has been serving as Senior Director and Welsh the Director of Artist Development. The two men replace Dawn Hudson, who left FIND to become the CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. “BLACK SWAN” WINS BIG AT SPIRIT AWARDS
The Film Independent Spirit Awards just wrapped (see it on IFC tonight @ 10ET) and Darren Aronofsky‘s thriller Black Swan was the big winner taking home four awards, including Best Feature, Best Director for Aronofsky and Best Female Lead for Natalie Portman. Winter’s Bone won the supporting acting prizes with John Hawkes taking it for actor and Dale Dickey for actress while James Franco won Best Male Lead for 127 Hours, Banksy‘s Exit through the Gift Shop won Best Documentary and Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg won Best Screenplay for The Kids Are All Right. Knowing that the IFP/Los Angeles was to announce its split from the Independent Feature Project and rebranding as Film Independent (FIND) today, I hit the search engines for the official press release and was startled to come across this news piece about the arrest of an IFP leader. Fortunately, the piece refers to the detaining of a South African Inkatha Freedom Party MP for “dagga possession” and has nothing to do with the independent film organization.
