IFP JOINS SHOOTING PEOPLE AND NYWIFT IN FIRST U.S. DELEGATION TO HOT DOCS

The IFP have announced they have teamed up with fellow organizations Shooting People and New York Women in Film & Television to lead the first-ever U.S. delegation to Hot Docs. The members of these organizations will get to attend the Toronto Documentary Forum, International Co-Production Day, and be featured in the Digital Doc Shop market. In addition, the delegation will receive other perks: access to all 255 screenings, Digital Doc Shop screenings, and all Hot Docs discussions, including the Kickstart panels, Hot Docs Talks, CoffeeTalks, and Micro Meanings. IFP ANNOUNCES SCRIPT TO SCREEN LINEUP

On March 20 & 21, IFP, with The Writer’s Guild of America, East, will present its annual Script to Screen Conference in New York City. This year’s conference opens with The Daily Show’s Steve Bodow and closes with Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen, Twilight) and Brian Koppelman (Rounders, Ocean’s Thirteen). ATTRACTIONS FROM FAR AWAY

This year Filmmaker partnered with the IFP to create a new award to be given out in a few weeks at this year’s Gotham Awards. Titled Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You, the award is designed to highlight worthy films that have fallen beneath the theatrical radar. NETFLIX FINDS ITS SPIRIT

The clock is ticking on a promotion offered by Netflix and Film Independent (FIND, formerly the IFP Los Angeles) and having to do with this year’s Spirit Awards. Only FIND members are allowed to vote for the Spirit Awards, and, this year, FIND members will receive a free three-month Netflix membership and a special code allowing them to rent all the nominated films. To take advantage of this, you need to join FIND (if you’re not a member) by November 15.

FIND-ING OUT

Knowing that the IFP/Los Angeles was to announce its split from the Independent Feature Project and rebranding as Film Independent (FIND) today, I hit the search engines for the official press release and was startled to come across this news piece about the arrest of an IFP leader. Fortunately, the piece refers to the detaining of a South African Inkatha Freedom Party MP for “dagga possession” and has nothing to do with the independent film organization. Perhaps you’ve heard that the IFP/New York has retooled its annual Gotham Awards, moving the event out of IFP Market week to December 1 — smack dab at the start of the Oscar push.
