Two Dollar Radio Launches Microbudget Film Division with Rombes Script, The Removals
Two Dollar Radio, the Columbus, OH-based independent literary house is launching a microbudget film division, and the first project out of the gate is The Removals, written by author, critic and frequent Filmmaker contributor Nicholas Rombes. (His Blue Velvet Project remains a high water mark of this site.) Directing will be Grace Krilanovich, author of acclaimed teen vampire novel, The Orange Eats Creeps, which made a guest appearance recently in Rombes’ essay on Only God Forgives. “The story is part-thriller, part-nightmarish examination of the widening gap between originality and technology, told with remarkable precision,” writes Two Dollar Radio on its Tumblr page. “Haunting and engaging, The Removals imagines where we go from here.”
From the press release:
Two Dollar Radio is one of the most acclaimed contemporary presses. Their titles have been honored by the National Book Foundation, picked as ‘Editors’ Choice’ selections by the New York Times Book Review, and placed on year-end best-of lists at O, The Oprah Magazine, NPR, The Believer, and Salon, amongst others.
“I believe that we’ve demonstrated a knack for producing work that is distinctive, singular, and culturally resonant, all traits we’re striving for with our film division,” says Eric Obenauf, the publisher and editor-in-chief.
From the Indiegogo campaign (posted before The Removals was announced):
Our hope is to produce films with budgets in the $7,000 – $10,000 ballpark.
During the week of September 23, we will be announcing our initial 3 projects, the principal participants involved with each, along with teaser-trailers for 2 of them, starting Tuesday, September 24.
We have already optioned 3 feature film scripts, which are presently in pre-production. We are exceptionally giddy about each of these, and their potential. We will be updating this page with information on each of them starting Tuesday, September 24.
We’ll have more on Two Dollar Radio’s microbudget division as the other titles are announced and as The Removals goes through production.
