Big Ears Festival Announces 2018 Film Line-Up
For the third year now, Knoxville’s Big Ears Festival will offer a number of film-related screenings in conjunction with The Public Cinema, the organization co-founded by writer Darren Hughes and filmmaker Paul Harrill (Something, Anything). Filmmaker Blake Williams, whose experimental work is 3D-based, attended last year (subscribers can read his enthusiastic write-up here) and has programmed one of this year’s big series. San Francisco International Film Festival Celebrating its 60th edition, the San Francisco International Film Festival — now rebranded as the hashtag-friendly SFFILM Festival — impressed this first-timer not as a hoary institution, recumbent upon its laureled legacy, but as a festival keen to stake out vibrant new tangents, mindful of its city’s history (cinematic and otherwise) and full of surprises. Big Ears Opens Its Eyes: The Public Cinema at Knoxville’s Big Ears Festival
Since its first edition in 2009, the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, TN has earned a reputation as a daring music festival whose eclectic lineup is unfettered by commercial or corporate concerns. Artists run the gamut: avant garde jazz (Anthony Braxton), experimental hip hop (Shabazz Palaces), electronic (Nicolas Jaar), modern classical (Philip Glass). All of this takes place in remarkable indoor venues within walking distance of each other in the city’s downtown center.
