by Jason Guerrasio on Oct 20, 2011Tim Sutton’s upcoming Pavilion is a beautiful debut, a collage of subdued, hypnotic moments that combine to capture the aching aimlessness of youth. And now the film has a similarly stunning website. Designed by Caspar Newbolt of Version Industries, the site overlays images and GIFs on each page to bring many of the film’s visually striking moments to life. This lovely GIF, for instance, loops on the homepage: Over at the IFP website , Newbolt blogs about developing the Pavilion website, as well as the film’s posters. He discusses how watching the film inspired and informed his designs: “For the […]
by Jane Schoenbrun on Oct 17, 2011One thing I’ve been thinking a lot about since the Emerging Visions program is how different everyone’s path is to making every single one of their movies. Whether it’s your first one or your 15th, it’s always going to be a unique process. And even though each experience of making a film helps you build on your next film, each film is in a way like starting from scratch. All the writers, directors, and producers I met and listened to during Emerging Visions had something in common and that was their in-it-for-the-long-haul passion and their commitment to making each and […]
by Kate Barker-Froyland on Oct 15, 2011Did you miss the Filmmaker Conference at Independent Film Week last month? Me too – I managed to catch a few panels, but I spent most of the week running around, working, and attending other IFW events (as evidenced by my photo blogs here, here, and here). Luckily, IFP will streaming the entire conference available to members. One new video will be added to ifp.org every weekday this month. Membership levels start at $35, which for roughly 30 hours of film industry education (and tons of other benefits) is not a bad deal. One video is already online – a […]
by Jane Schoenbrun on Oct 14, 2011In a Brooklyn Rail piece titled “We Are All Scabs: Some Contradictions in U.S. Independent Film Culture,” Donal Foreman visits the IFP’s Independent Film Week and questions the debates over sustainability, marketing and audience-building that are rampant in our community. As we pursue DIY strategies, are we just implicitly and uncritically accepting the logic of the marketplace instead of conceptualizing more empowering, liberating structures? The key grafs: Whereas in previous times films were offered up to the distribution circuit to be either rejected or accepted as viable commodities, their makers are now being asked to lead that process of commodification […]
by Scott Macaulay on Oct 11, 2011Now that I’m a seasoned blogger with two blog entries under my belt, this entry concludes my foray into this type of writing with my reflections on the Emerging Visions Program. Just as my first blog entry received positive feedback, a colleague praised my second entry. All this praise could go to my head, particularly since this last time he was so earnestly descriptive about the piece, calling it: “Wonderfully wonderful. Wonderful wonderful. Wonderfully.” He’s adorable – he’s European and is still mastering English adjectives. But his sentiment rings true. The entire experience was overwhelming, and I’m not sure I […]
by Lanre Olabisi on Oct 9, 2011On the A train headed back to Williamsburg after a full day of Emerging Visions, Andrew Bird playing on my iPod. The day began with breakfast at Lincoln Center’s new Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center. One of my favorite moments of the day was at the breakfast when each of us had to introduce ourselves. We had to say what our craziest moment as a filmmaker was. I was reminded of the time I took the G train in the middle of the night wearing a prom-style dress while shooting a music video. The ultimate destination was Coney Island, and […]
by Kate Barker-Froyland on Oct 4, 2011The day started off with a nice boost to my ego: another filmmaker and fellow blogger had recognized the masterful wit in my first blog entry and approached me about it. He noted that he was normally the funny one, and would now step up his game. I am competitive by nature so this was music to my ears: bring it! Only now I have to be funny again, which may be easier said than done. We began the day with the standard fare – introductions with a filmmakers’ twist: we were tasked to name our craziest venture as a […]
