I’m a couple of weeks late posting about the latest edition of the Chicago Newcity Film 50 because, well, it’s a dense read — think Filmmaker‘s 25 New Faces times two, made all the more impressive because one person, Ray Pride (also a Filmmaker Contributing Editor) pens all the profiles. A list of 50 people who comprise a composite snapshot of the Windy City’s community of media creators (this year, Pride’s preamble states, the list devoted itself to artists as opposed to producers and programmers), the Chicago Film 50 is both an insightful read and a great resource. Writes Pride, […]
by Scott Macaulay on Oct 31, 2016Tonight at the HSBC offices in midtown was the IFP’s Independent Film Week launch party. Attending were participating filmmakers, several of our 25 New Faces, and many folks from the New York production community. But flying in from L.A. were Mike Ott and Atsuko Okatsuka, whose Littlerock — winner of the Filmmaker-sponsored “Best Film at a Theater Playing Near You” Gotham Award — premieres today at Cinema Village. Read Ray Pride on the movie here, and then check out the film. It’s highly recommended.
by Scott Macaulay on Aug 12, 2011Over at Movie City Indie,, Ray Pride posts all manner of thoughts and links regarding contemporary cinema. But over at Shark Forum, the Chicaco artists online group, he posts more personal stuff that might not make the general-interest cut of his other sites. Like here’s a collection of photos Pride took following his various director interviews. He writes, “I consistently blank on any memory of shaking hands in greeting. After each of the interviews, usually at a luxury hotel on Michigan Avenue or River North, I’ve grabbed the first bold image to clear my head from a half hour or […]
by Scott Macaulay on Mar 25, 2006If you want to be your own film cricket, as Ray Pride would say, then check out Criticker, a new “personalized search engine” in which you record your numerical scores on a number of movies and then sit back as the site predicts what else you might like. The difference between this site and others seems to be a very healthy representation of independent and foreign films.
by Scott Macaulay on Mar 19, 2006Ray Pride’s column over at Movie City News contains a long interview with Why We Fight director Eugene Jarecki in which he takes issue with David Denby’s recent review of his film: PRIDE: I’m not asking you to respond to this specific review, but I was floored by the incredibly jejune review that David Denby wrote in the New Yorker of Why We Fight. This is merely a collage film; this guy went in with a point to make; this is not true filmmaking. Does that trouble you when a reviewer is so obstinate, so resistant to whatyou’ve made? JARECKI: […]
by Scott Macaulay on Mar 14, 2006Over at Movie City Indie, Ray Pride notes this Reel Chicago piece reporting that Chicago-based avant-gardist James Fotopoulos is about to embark on his first “commercial production,” a $2 million adaptation of Jay Bonansinga’s police novel The Sleep Police. Ray links to his own profile of Fotopolous, but two can play at that game — here’s Travis Crawford’s interview with Fotopolous appearing in Filmmaker.
by Scott Macaulay on Feb 28, 2006Movie City Indie maestro (and occasional Filmmaker contributing editor) Ray Pride posts a series of short docs entitled 12×5 which he directed with Amy Cargill over at Movie City News. Check out Ray’s deftly edited ruminations on personal futures as remembered from the past.
by Scott Macaulay on Feb 14, 2006It is hard to beat Ray Pride to the punch when passing along a relevant indie-film link. He’s the first to note that the Four-Eyed Monsters duo of Arin Crumley and Susan Buice have just posted Episode 3.5 of their popular video blog. Watch it and you’ll see why they’re not calling it Episode Four, as this week’s podcast deals with the burn-out at having to churn out these video blogs. More positively, they post on their My Space page links to some of their own favorite video blogs, including RocketBoom, Diggnation, and filmmaker Kevin Bewersdorf’s podcast for his film […]
by Scott Macaulay on Dec 22, 2005Anne Thompson’s industry column “Risky Business” lived for a while at Filmmaker before moving to swankier digs at The Hollywood Reporter. Now, Thompson’s opinionated takes on the intersection of films and the film business has spawned a blog. Bookmark it now. And, via GreenCine, comes this notice of New York Times critic Dave Kehr’s blog, which is subtitled “Dave Kehr reports from the lost continent of cinephilia.” Kehr’s posts are great reads, like this early take on Harold Ramis’s upcoming Focus release, The Ice Harvest: “After all the failed attempts to capture the flavor of the great noir novelists like […]
by Scott Macaulay on Nov 6, 2005Ray Pride posted this link to the new videoblog by the makers of the indie film Four-Eyed Monsters (which, given how hard I’ve been trying to get a screener DVD from the filmmakers, must be the hardest-to-see film of all this year’s hard-to-see pics without distribution). While I wait… and wait for a screener, I’ll content myself with the videoblog, the first clip of which is a totally charming ode to being a broke filmmaker without a deal.
