Killers | Directors The Mo Brothers (Timothy Tjahjanto and Kimo Stromboel)
Attention, our audience’s and our own — it’s a valued commodity these days. We struggle to command our audience’s attention, for them to discover our work and then, once they’ve discovered it, to actually focus on it. Meanwhile, we struggle to focus our own attention, to fight our society’s weapons of mass distraction so we can not just see our work to completion but fully discover the meanings within it. What role does attention play in your work? Can you discuss an instance where you thought about some aspect of attention when it came to your film?
Attention very much plays a crux role in our upcoming film Killers, we will admit it that this is a slow burn piece that goes in a downward spiral. Our essence is in character developments of the narrative, the unfolding of events within the film, every scene big and small is (within our intention) related to the outcome of the story and for this attention is something that we demand from our audience.
However, individually, we also recognize the effort that it takes for an audience to pay their undivided attention becomes more of a challenge, entertainment becomes readily available, and some people strictly want to be entertained in their world of mega blockbuster.
Audience and filmmakers strictly just have to find a middle ground, for our part, the quest to create film that’s thought provoking and captivating has always been our priority. When the audience is bored, that is when the battle is lost.
