GUS VAN SANT TO BE HONORED AT GOTHAMS

IFP announced today that Gus Van Sant will be presented with a Gotham Awards Tribute at the 18th Annual Gotham Awards on Tuesday, December 2nd in New York. Van Sant’s next project is the bio pic, Milk, about the first openly gay man elected to major public office in the United States, Harvey Milk. Starring Sean Penn as Milk along with Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin, Diego Luna and James Franco, the film will be released by Focus Features in select cities on Wednesday, November 26th, 2008 and then expand in December. Ancestral Roots

New York-based film critic Godfrey Cheshire was attending a Christmas gathering with his family in North Carolina when he received some surprising news from his cousin Charlie. Midway Plantation, the ancestral home of their extended family since the 1840s, was to be transplanted to a new location. In the name of progress, the city of Raleigh was expanding a highway and strip malls. MEDICINE OPENS INDEPENDENT FILM WEEK

IFP has announced it will be kicking off it’s 30th annual Independent Film Week with the New York premiere of Barry Jenkins‘s Medicine For Melancholy. A party will follow honoring Jenkins and the other talents included in this year’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film, which also marks Filmmaker‘s 10th year doing the list. Five of this year’s “25” will also be premiering short films at Independent Film Week created for an initiative with Nokia and IFP. FINNERAN JOINS SUNDANCE INSTITUTE

In a release sent out today, the Sundance Institute announced that Patricia Finneran, festival director at Silverdocs: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival, will be coming on as a Senior Consultant of the their Documentary Film Program. According to the release, in addition to representing the Sundance Documentary Program internationally, Finneran will be responsible for recommending film projects, maintaining the Documentary Program’s New York base and working on the Program’s initiatives such as the Sundance Doc Fund and the Skoll Foundation’s Stories of Change: Social Entrepreneurship in Focus Through Documentary. 10 YARDS TAKES ONLINE PASS

Announced yesterday, filmmakers Hunter Weeks and Josh Caldwell just released their offbeat doc 10 Yards: Fantasy Football on Ourstage.com and SnagFilms.com. A conventional nationwide DVD release will begin on Sept. 30. According to a release about the online world premiere, Ourstage will offer a free iTunes download of the film for two weeks (as well as offer free music downloads from the soundtrack that features independent artists Luke Brindley, John Haydon, Analog Jetpack, Greenland, Family Jewlers and Santa Clara) while SnagFilms will stream it for free and allow for viral sharing via its “virtual movie theater” widgets. GOTHAM AWARDS TO HONOR CRUZ

The IFP announced today that Penelope Cruz will be presented with a Gotham Award Tribute at the 18th annual Gotham Awards on Dec. 2 at NYC’s Cipriani Wall Street. Cruz can recently be seen in Elegy opposite Ben Kingsley and Woody Allen‘s Vicky Cristina Barcelona (pictured right).
