Calvary

One morning Father James (Brendan Gleeson) hears a startling confession: in a week, the person on the other side of the booth is going to kill the priest. It’s not because Father James has done anything wrong: in his small Irish community, he’s the very model of a patient, non-judgmental priest. But the sins of a molesting priest have to be accounted for, and the aggrieved party thinks murdering a totally innocent church representative will make his revenge count. With a week to decide what to do, Father James tries to continue serving his parishioners while reconciling with his semi-estranged visiting daughter Fiona (Kelly Reilly). Writer/director John Michael McDonagh’s follow-up to The Guard is another darkly comic take on life in rural Ireland.
