The Academy Awards are still a long way off, but the recent Gotham Awards, the Spirit Award nominations, today’s New York Film Critics Circle Awards and now the Oscar doc longlist mean that awards season is truly kicking into gear. The 15 docs still in Academy Award contention are: Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, Never Sorry LLC Bully, The Bully Project LLC Chasing Ice, Exposure Detropia, Loki Films Ethel, Moxie Firecracker Films 5 Broken Cameras, Guy DVD Films The Gatekeepers, Les Films du Poisson, Dror Moreh Productions, Cinephil The House I Live In, Charlotte Street Films, LLC How to Survive a […]
by Nick Dawson on Dec 3, 2012201o “25 New Faces” pick Matt Porterfield, the writer/director of Putty Hill, will premiere his third feature, I Used to Be Darker, at Sundance in about six weeks, and the trailer for the movie just dropped. The synopsis from the SFF press release describes it as follows: “A runaway seeks refuge with her aunt and uncle in Baltimore, only to find their marriage ending and her cousin in crisis. In the days that follow, the family struggles to let go while searching for things to sustain them.”
by Nick Dawson on Dec 3, 2012Announced today by the Sundance Film Festival were their robust Premieres and Documentary Premieres sections, which always feature a large number of well-established names both in front of and behind the camera. In the narrative section, Richard Linklater’s trilogy-concluding Before Midnight is bound to get a lot of attention, while there are also welcome returns to the festival for Michael Winterbottom, Rob Epstein, David Gordon Green, Park Chan-wook and Jane Campion. There additionally notable debuts from Joseph Gordon-Levitt from Nat Faxon and Jim Rash (the writers of The Descendants). On the doc side, Lucy Walker, Barbara Kopple, Alex Gibney, Sebastian […]
by Nick Dawson on Dec 3, 2012The first season of Lena Dunham’s Girls had its sneak preview at SXSW in March this year, but the show was such a success that it’s going to be already in early January 2013 that season two kicks off. The newly released first trailer for the new season is below, and I for one am excited to see what Filmmaker‘s ridiculously successful former intern will be offering up in the new year.
by Nick Dawson on Nov 30, 2012Today is round two of the Sundance announcements, comprised of Spotlight (notable festival films that premiered in 2012), Park City at Midnight (midnight movies) and New Frontiers, the experimental strand of the fest, which includes both films and installations. We now have a few days to parse the program announcements from the past two days, and the lineups for the Premieres & Documentary Premieres and Shorts sections will be announced Monday and Tuesday of next week. SPOTLIGHT Regardless of where these films have played throughout the world, the Spotlight program is a tribute to the cinema we love. Fill […]
by Nick Dawson on Nov 29, 2012The line-ups for the U.S. Dramatic, U.S. Documentary, World Dramatic and World Documentary sections, plus NEXT, have just been announced. There’s a lot to take in here — many films from familiar names (including a healthy number by Filmmaker “25 New Faces” and IFP Lab alums) — and also a lot of movies that I have no point of reference for and will have to do some homework on before what will be a very busy January in Park City. (Tomorrow the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight and New Frontier sections will also be announced, with Premieres & Documentary Premieres […]
by Nick Dawson on Nov 28, 2012Though the New York indie world has still not yet recovered from the exertions of the Gotham Awards, the Independent Spirit Awards nominations are upon us. Unsurprisingly, Beasts, Bernie, Moonrise Kingdom and The Loneliest Planet feature heavily (as they did at the Gothams), while Ira Sachs’ Keep the Lights On here also bags a number of nods in top-level categories. Rama Burshtein’s Fill the Void, Colin Trevorrow’s Safety Not Guaranteed, Martin McDonagh’s Seven Psychopaths, David Ayer’s End of Watch, Adam Leon’s Gimme the Loot, Zal Batmanglij’s Sound of My Voice, Ben Lewin’s The Sessions, Peter Nicks’ The Waiting Room and Ava DuVernay’s Middle of Nowhere also […]
by Nick Dawson on Nov 27, 2012Disclaimer: I attended last night’s Gotham Awards in various capacities: as a journalist, as a Best Film Not Playing at a Theatre Near You jury member, and as an IFP staff member involved in the behind-the-scenes running of the show. So my perspective on the event is somewhat fractured. As the Gothams is the first award show of the season, people are always looking to it as a bellwether for the future. Last night, Beasts of the Southern Wild — although not nominated in the Best Feature category — came away with the headlines and further awards momentum, having won two statuettes […]
by Nick Dawson on Nov 27, 2012It’s the Gotham Independent Film Awards tonight, IFP’s annual celebration of the best in independent film. For all thos unlucky enough not to be attending, you can keep track of the happenings by watching a live stream of the show on the Gothams website here. Also, look out for a recap of the night in this space tomorrow a.m. In the meantime, while we gear up for the show, here’s a full list of Filmmaker’s coverage of the films and individuals being honored tonight: Beasts of the Southern Wild Storm Song: Beasts of the Southern Wild and Tchoupitoulas Bernie […]
by Nick Dawson on Nov 26, 2012Jamie Stuart has been Filmmaker‘s videographer for years, but became known to a broader audience in late 2010 when he captured snowbound New York in his short film Idiot with a Tripod. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Stuart was out again filming the impact of extreme weather on the city, and has now released the short film Eternal Storm, to which he adds the following notes: I don’t know if it’s right to create art out of this experience, yet. I don’t know what the time limit is. But I have created something that I hope people can appreciate. And art always […]
