With news today from Variety that the Criterion Collection will release some IFC Films titles on DVD and Blu-ray (including A Christmas Tale and Gomorrah in Nov. and Che and Hunger in Dec.) I’m curious what other IFC titles should get the coveted Criterion treatment. 1) In The Loop – Not only would director Armando Iannucci do a great commentary but also included could be episodes of the inspiration for the film, the BBC series The Thick of It. Essay could be written by David Frost (hey, this is a wish list, I can dream). 2) Antichrist – Yes, sex […]
If you missed Joe Swanberg’s Alexander the Last on screen at SXSW last week (the only place, actually, where you could have seen iit on screen), then join Swanberg and stars Jess Weixler and Amy Seimetz at the IFC Center in New York tonight for what will be a rare public screening of the film. I say “rare” because the film is already screening on IFC’s On Demand and with that being the case many regional festivals will likely take a pass on the movie. Filmmaker‘s Alicia Van Couvering, who wrote for us in 2007 what I still think is […]
At a Sundance press breakfast this morning IFC Films announced a partnership with SXSW in which five films screening at the festival will be available simultaneously on IFC’s on-demand platform. The films include Joe Swanberg’s premiering Alexander the Last as well as our Filmmaker mag cover film Medicine for Melancholy, which will return to the festival for a special screening. Attending the event was Steven Soderbergh, who spoke about independent filmmakers’ need to “let go of the fantasy” that their film will receive a conventional theatrical release in this tough climate. He also quipped that the Festival Direct program appealed […]
Wow — this is a surprise. We, like many others, had heard that Magnolia would be releasing this film. According to this Indiewire report, Steven Soderbergh’s Che will open theatrically in December for a one-week Oscar qualifying run and then will play in January through IFC In Theaters, its day and date platform.
Bradley Beesley‘s sequel to his breakout hit Okie Noodling will be screening this Friday and Saturday at the IFC Center in New York. If you’re not familiar with the film, here’s a sum up from the release: In 2001, filmmaker Bradley Beesley brought the strange subculture of barehanded catfishing to the screen in ‘Okie Noodling’, which won the Audience Choice Award and 1st runner-up for Best Documentary at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. Now he returns to his home state of Oklahoma to see how the sport has evolved over the last decade in ‘Okie Noodling II’. Revisiting the colorful, […]
According to Variety, Lance Hammer‘s Sundance award-winning film Ballast has dropped out of its deal with IFC and has moved to Strand Releasing. An excerpt: “Obviously, we’re disappointed, but how can we not support him if he tries to take control of this himself?” IFC Entertainment veep of acquisitions Arianna Bocco said. “We wanted the movie, we love the movie, and we think that we would have done really well with it. It’s the first time that’s happened with us.” “The budget was big enough that it would be hard in the current model to see that money back,” Hammer […]
Thursday, June 5, Filmmaker, the IFC, IndieGoGo and the IFP are hosting an evening at the IFC Center that is part of Internet Week New York. It’s called “Where Film and Internet Collide,” and it’s one of three events going under this name that are dedicated to the merging of filmic and web sensibilities when it comes to creating new work. At the IFC we’ll be screening a number of interesting works created for the web and then will be discussing these works and web production in general with their creators. There will be plenty of time for questions, so […]
I’m posting this short review by Richard Brody that appeared in the New Yorker this week as the first of a trickle of postings, message board missives, MySpace bulletins, and FaceBook alerts that will soon develop into a deafening roar of digital noise converging towards one important goal: to get you to see Frownland this weekend in New York at its world theatrical premiere at the IFC Center! If you’ve been following this blog over the last year, you know of our huge love for this film. I first saw it a year ago at SXSW and was on the […]
If you’re in New York tomorrow night come and check out an evening we are co-hosting with the IFC Center that’s dedicated to one of the most vital film artists working in New York City today: Jem Cohen. Here’s what the press release says: “An Evening with Jem Cohen” features the acclaimed filmmaker of Chain, Benjamin Smoke, and Lost Book Found in person to present the New York premiere of his new documentary BUILDING A BROKEN MOUSTRAP, a portrait of the Dutch band The Ex, which Cohen describes as “Concert film. City film. Protest film.” With a stylistically unique but […]
If you’re in NYC today, come check out the first of three evenings Filmmaker is hosting with the IFC of new work and personal appearances by idiosyncratic documentary filmmakers. The first is tonight and we’ll be screening the work of talking with Bradley Beesley. Here’s more info: Filmmaker and IFC Center are pleased to announce the debut of “Dialogues on Film,” a new series of screenings and discussions with directors, moderated by Filmmaker’s Scott Macaulay; the series launches Monday, July 9 at 7:30pm with “An Evening with Bradley Beesley.” The program includes Beesley’s cult classic documentary OKIE NOODLING, along with […]
