After TIFF’s first wave lineup announcement yesterday, the lineup now arrives for the 80th edition of the Venice Film Festival, which will take place from August 30 through September 9.

Last week, it was revealed that Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers would be pulled from the festival due to talent (namely Zendaya) being unable to attend due SAG-AFTRA strike rules. Originally programmed as the festival’s opening night  selection, Edoardo de Angelis’s Comandante will now kick off the fest.

At a glance, lineup highlights include new films from Pablo Larraín, Rysusuke Hamaguchi, Michael Mann, David Fincher, Ava DuVernay, Sofia Coppola, Richard Linklater, Wes Anderson, Quentin Dupieux, Frederick Wiseman, Bradley Cooper, Michel Franco and more.

Among the American independents, Harmony Korine’s Aggro Dr1ft, starring Travis Scott and reportedly shot using infra-red cameras, will premiere out-of-competition. In the Non-Fiction section there is Ryuichi Sakamoto Opus, directed by his son, Neo Sora, who was one of Filmmaker‘s 25 New Faces in 2020. In the Horizons section, Bill and Turner Ross premiere what is being called their narrative feature debut, Gasoline Rainbow. In Horizons Extra, actor Jack Huston makes his directorial debut with Day of the Fight, a boxing picture starring Ron Perlman, Joe Pesci and John Magaro. Olmo Schnabel, who has produced a number of shorts and has worked as an assistant on his father Julian’s At Eternity’s Gate, makes his own writing and directing debut with Pet Shop Boys, which stars Grace Brennan, Willem Dafoe and Peter Sarsgaard.

Despite its September 8 U.S. release date similarly being pushed back to December 8 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things will nonetheless still world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
