Originally a spec script from Bridesmaids co-writer Annie Mumolo, Joy received a top to bottom rewrite from David O. Russell before production, and the results appear to be somewhat darker than his last two screwball jabs, American Hustle and The Silver Linings Playbook. In any event, here is your first look at the rags to riches tale of Joy Mangano, inventor of the Miracle Mop, as played by Russell regular Jennifer Lawrence.

In conjunction with his workshop tour, commercial director-d.p. Vincent Laforet has been making the publicity rounds, conducting interviews with several outlets, including our own Michael Murie. In the majority of these discussions, Laforet emphasizes the importance and motivation of camera movement. “Generally speaking, in modern cinema,” he told Murie, “you rarely see stationary cameras. Trailer Watch: First Look at David O. Russell’s American Hustle
David O. Russell went on GMA this morning to talk about his December release, American Hustle, a fictionalized version of the Abscam operation, and share a teaser for the film. A Black List favorite from 2010 which was formerly called American Bullshit, Russell’s movie reunites him with Amy Adams and Christian Bale from The Fighter and Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro from Silver Linings Playbook, while Jeremy Renner, Michael Peña and Louis CK also appear. This certainly looks like it will be a lot of fun.

Silver Linings Dominates Spirit Awards
In what may be an indicator of the direction tonight’s Oscars will take, David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook dominated the proceedings at yesterday’s Independent Spirit Awards. The film, which was Filmmaker‘s cover movie for the magazine’s Fall 2012 issue, won big in the major categories, taking Best Feature, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Actress (for Jennifer Lawrence). The awards show was ultimately a rather curious affair. Best First Feature was won by Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which is actually Chbosky’s second film as director. The word on the film is that this is David O. Russell going back to his roots somewhat, returning to the territory of films like Flirting with Disaster, which is something I can definitely get on board with.
