As part of the “Gothams Classics” event series celebrating the Gotham Independent Film Awards awarded annually by IFP (Filmmaker‘s parent organization), directors Mira Nair and Debra Granik will be in conversation at the Made in NY Media Center following screenings of two of their films. The Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP), Filmmaker‘s parent organization, announced today that two new awards will be given at the upcoming 25th Annual IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards. Two Breakthrough Series awards will single out outstanding achievement in serialized content in television and new digital media. Long Form (for continuing or limited series with episodes running 30 minutes and longer) and Short Form (for continuing or limited series with the majority of episodes under 20 minutes). Today the IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards (presented by Filmmaker Magazine‘s parent organization IFP) announced three additional tributes to be presented at this year’s 25th anniversary awards ceremony. In addition to previously announced director honoree Todd Haynes, Actor and  Actress tributes will be presented to Robert Redford and Helen Mirren, and Anonymous Content founder and CEO Steve Golin will be awarded the Industry Tribute. In the lead-up to the Gotham Independent Film Awards on December 2nd, IFP announced it will hold a screening series to highlight the nominees of the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award. From Thursday, November 21 through Saturday, November 23, the category’s five directorial debuts will screen at the new Made in NY Media Center by IFP in Dumbo. The films are Stacie Passon’s Concussion; Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale Station; Adam Leon’s Gimme The Loot; Alexandre Moors’ Blue Caprice; and Amy Seimetz’s Sun Don’t Shine. IFP announced today that Richard Linklater will receive the Director’s Tribute at this year’s Gotham Independent Film Awards. The helmer of Before Midnight, one of the most respected, gifted and prolific figures within U.S. independent film over the past two decades, will be the recipient of this honor 21 years after making his breakthrough feature with Slacker. Wes Anderson’s ’60s-set ode to childhood imagination and romance, Moonrise Kingdom, picked up the Best Picture Award at the IFP Gotham Awards Monday night at Cipriani’s in New York. Winning two awards was Beasts of the Southern Wild director Benh Zeitlin, who won both the Breakthrough Director Award as well as a newly inaugurated Bingham Ray Award, for “filmmakers who bring a distinctive vision to the world.” The latter award came with $10,000 and $60,000 worth of equipment rental from Panavision. This morning, the Gotham Awards nominations were announced (indeed tweeted), and in a very competitive field, Benh Zeitlin’s Beasts of the Southern Wild, Richard Linklater’s Bernie, Ava DuVernay’s Middle of Nowhere and Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom lead the way, each earning two nominations.
