Clocking in at just three days, the Northside Film Festival still provides enough breadth in programming to rival an event three times its size. In addition to the centerpiece DIY Competition and short programs, the fest has added an episodics sidebar this year, featuring Doron Max Hagay’s Monica web series, among others. A former critic for The Playlist, Chris Bell fulfills the promise of the observant, patient lens he wielded in shorts such as Bridges with his feature length character study, The Winds That Scatter. The Williamsburg-based Northside Film Festival is in swing this week with its typically eclectic mixture of pictures curated by various local film partners (including IFP, Filmmaker‘s publisher) as well as, for the DIY Competition, their in-house team. 2014 Northside Film Festival Lineup
A more consolidated, off-the-beaten-path cousin to Rooftop Films, the Northside Film Festival will take place from June 16 – 19, in and around Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Priding itself on partnerships, Northside will co-present a number of New York premieres and Special Screenings in conjunction with the likes of IFP, DCTV, BAMCinemaFest, Women Make Movies and Indiewire. Films to keep an eye out for include recent Tribeca winner Ne Me Quitte Pas, Homemakers, The Badabook, i hate myself :), Summer of Blood, and retrospective showings of Daises and Seventeen (in 16 mm). A number of our favorite independent films of the year are screening this week at the Northside Festival, a Brooklyn-based film and music event that gathers a number of film organizations, includuing Filmmaker, to guest curate some of its programming.
