Tribeca Film Festival Announces “Innovation Week”
The Tribeca Film Festival has made significant strides to transform their trend-buoyed cachet into a boundary pushing enterprise. John August Launches iPhone Screenplay Reader, Weekend Read
Screenwriter and director John August and his colleagues at Quote-Unquote Apps have launched Weekend Read, a full-featured screenplay reader for the iPhone. The app imports scripts in Final Draft, PDF, Fountain, Markdown and text formats and then creates an “optimized view” that’s perfectly sized for the iPhone’s 4″ screen. Fonts can be increased, decreased or changed; there’s a “night mode”; and scripts can be imported from Dropbox, a URL, email or any app that has an “Open in” option. Trailer Watch: Richard Ayoade’s The Double
Given the breadth of his reverential cannon, it’s surprising that the number of Dostoyevsky adaptations remains relatively slim. The English comedian Richard Ayoade has brought a noted flourish to his translation of The Double, the Russian giant’s novella about a man haunted by his far more confident and aggressive doppelgänger. Well received at Toronto and Sundance, the film, which stars Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska, will open in the U.S. on May 9, courtesy of Magnolia Pictures. I, for one, am interested in seeing the typecast Eisenberg working to convey some bull-headed magnetism as the titular character.

Berlinale 2014: Josephine Decker on Thou Wast Mild and Lovely and Butter on the Latch.
At every festival, there are “did you see that?” moments which create a buzz among audiences and critics. One such early example at this year’s Berlinale came midway through Josephine Decker’s hypnotic, farm-set thriller Thou Wast Mild and Lovely, when the point of view of a violent, ambiguously-rendered sexual encounter suddenly switches to that of a cow, through whose eyes we see the next few scenes. SFFS Announces Documentary Film Fund Finalists
The San Francisco Film Society has announced this year’s finalists for the Documentary Film Fund, which is set to divy up $75,000 next month. Open to nonfiction films in post-production, the Fund has previously supported such Sundance titles as Narco Cultura, American Promise and the Oscar-nominated Cutie and the Boxer. Making the list is Western, the Ross Brothers’ follow-up to Tchoupitoulas, and Blood Brother director Steve Hoover’s Gennadly.
