Today, Sundance Institute announces the 2023 fellows for its Directors, Screenwriters and Native Labs. 12 fellows will join this year’s Directors and Screenwriters cohort, while the Native Lab will support five fellows. The Native Lab, which supports Indigenous filmmakers developing feature films and episodic projects, will begin with an online portion that runs May 1-5 before continuing in-person in Santa Fe, New Mexico from May 8-13. The Sundance Institute announces today six fellows selected for the second edition of the Trans Possibilities Intensive. Hosted by the Intensive’s founder Moi Santos, the three-part event will take place from March 27-29 and feature mentorship from four creative advisors and Sundance’s Equity, Impact, and Belonging Program. The six fellows for 2023 are Seyi Adebanjo, Rajvi Desai, Malik Ever, Nick Janaye, Jamie John and Tee Park Jaehyung. Today, the nonprofit Sundance Institute announced the 35 projects that will receive a total of $1,396,500 in unrestricted grant support through this year’s Sundance Institute Documentary Fund. The grantees are in various stages of production: Five in development, 15 in production, 10 in post-production and 5 actively pursuing audience engagement and social impact campaigns. Sundance Institute CEO Joana Vicente announced today that Eugene Hernandez will join the nonprofit as the new Festival Director and head of public programming of the Sundance Film Festival. His first festival leading as Director will be in 2024, while the forthcoming 2023 edition will be led by Vicente in collaboration with Director of Programming Kim Yutani and the Institute’s broader leadership team. The non-profit Sundance Institute has shared preliminary updates for the 2023 edition of the Sundance Film Festival, which will take place January 19-29. Most notably, the festival will pivot back to being a largely in-person festival, with screenings kicking off in Utah on January 19 in Park City, Salt Lake City and the Sundance Resort. Sundance will then introduce on-demand film streaming via its festival platform on January 24 for all of the competition titles (U.S. Dramatic, U.S. Documentary, World Cinema Dramatic, World Cinema Documentary, and NEXT) as well as episodic and short film titles. The Sundance Institute announced today the fellows selected for this year’s Producers Lab (July 25-28) alongside the participants in its Producers Summit (July 29-31). The forthcoming Lab features 11 fellows, with six fiction and five non-fiction producers among them, each with specific projects.
