Trailer Watch: Pietro Marcello’s Scarlet
Almost exactly a year after it made its world premiere as the Opening Film of the 2022 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, the trailer arrives for Italian director Pietro Marcello’s Scarlet (L’Envol). Marcello’s French-language debut follows his previous effort Martin Eden, which made waves on the festival circuit in 2020 (despite the pandemic). Kino Lorber will release Scarlet in New York theaters next month. Trailer Watch: Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer
With summer blockbuster season drawing near, a new, three-minute long trailer for Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer has arrived. The film stars Cillian Murphy as the titular American physicist colloquially known as the “father of the atomic bomb.” Also starring are Emily Blunt, Robert Downey, Jr., Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett and Kenneth Branagh. Watch the latest trailer above, which introduces several pivotal characters and the actors they’re portrayed by. Oppenheimer will release via Universal Pictures on July 21, the same day that Greta Gerwig’s hotly anticipated Barbie film is set to hit theaters.

The American Pavilion Announces Its Emerging Filmmaker Showcase at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival
Celebrating its 26th edition, The American Pavilion announces the 2023 Emerging Filmmaker Showcase at the forthcoming Cannes Film Festival. 38 short films comprise this year’s Showcase, with 22 projects featuring women filmmakers. The selected films are divided into the following categories: Student Short Films, Student Documentaries, Emerging Filmmaker Short Films, Emerging Filmmaker Documentaries, Emerging Filmmaker LGBTQ Showcase Films and an Alumni Showcase. Films from the U.S., Australia, Canada, Nigeria and Sweden are represented among the lineup this year. Trailer Watch: 4K Restoration of Béla Tarr and Ágnes Hranitzky’s Werckmeister Harmonies
A trailer has arrived for the 4K restoration of Béla Tarr and Ágnes Hranitzky’s 2000 film Werckmeister Harmonies from Janus Films. Based on the 1989 novel The Melancholy of Resistance by Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai, the film will be re-released in New York later this month with more cities to follow. Rooftop Films Announces Programming for Summer Series 2023
The New York City-based independent film non-profit Rooftop Films announces today the lineup for their annual Summer Series (presented by AMC Networks), the outdoor film festival that showcases new indie titles all summer long across all five boroughs. The 27th edition will kick off on Thursday, May 25th at Green-Wood Cemetery, and per tradition, will feature a night of live music and short film screenings. Each subsequent screening during Summer Series 2023 will include filmmaker Q&As, live performances and/or free after parties. Dune: Part Two will hit theaters just over two years after Dune, director Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 landmark sci-fi novel. Portland Art Museum’s PAM CUT // Center for an Untold Tomorrow has announced the honorees for the fourth annual Cinema Unbound Awards, which recognizes those working within the intersection of art and cinema.
