by Sarah Salovaara on Jan 22, 2014As a continuation of Filmmaker‘s coverage on upcoming courses at the MINY Media Center by IFP, Starlight Runner CEO Jeff Gomez opted to share a few of his thoughts on why transmedia is no mere trend. “At the turn of the century,” notes Gomez, “our entire communications system went into hyperdrive, and has only been picking up speed. At the same time, our three network, three newspaper, three neighborhood movie theater world has been blown to a million pieces.” How one capitalizes on the wealth of new media is exactly what Gomez aims to instruct in his masterclass, “Creating Blockbuster […]

by Sarah Salovaara on Nov 13, 2013With the official launch of the Made in New York Media Center by IFP this week, news of its imminent offerings was not far behind. One particular course that’s setting up shop at 30 John Street already boasts an impressive track record. The Edit Center, which is housed around the corner on Jay Street, will bring their hands-on framework to the nascent Media Center beginning this November. An intensive six-week course, The Edit Center offers students the unique opportunity of cutting their teeth (pun intended) on a real, live independent film currently in post-production. Guided by a professional instructor and […]
by Sarah Salovaara on Oct 2, 2013This morning, Mayor Bloomberg and IFP’s Executive Director Joana Vicente kicked off the launch of the Made in NY Media Center by IFP alongside the Center’s Founding Artist in Residence, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson. At the event, Mayor Bloomberg said, “The Made in NY Media Center by IFP continues the work this administration has done to diversify New York City’s economy and provide access to affordable work space. New technologies and distribution platforms are appearing every day, and entrepreneurs, growing businesses and creative individuals will have the chance to harness their skills with the educational resources provided by the Media Center […]
by Nick Dawson on Oct 1, 2013I’ve been really eager to hear more about IFP’s newest venture, the Made in NY Media Center by IFP, which is a collaboration with the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, the NYC Economic Development Corporation and General Assembly (an organization offering immersive classes in web development, media and business management). I was all ears for Thursday’s Filmmaker Conference profile panel where representatives from each of those organizations spoke a little more about the Media Center and what it will offer for NYC-area filmmakers. Opening in two weeks in a beautiful 20,000 square foot ground-floor DUMBO location (22 John Street), the Media Center aims […]

So if you have an idea for a transmedia project that you’d like to develop and monetize, this is a great opportunity to be on the ground floor as the media center kicks off its inaugural year in October with a brand-new space in DUMBO. At the “Community Workspace” level, you get access to […]
by Shaun Seneviratne on Aug 30, 2013Editor’s Note: The subject of this article, the Made in NY Media Center by IFP, is developed and operated by IFP, also the publisher of Filmmaker. Cantankerousness is a disease that can affect even the smartest among us — back in the day, Socrates protested his ideas shouldn’t be written down, fearing that there was no way the written word could capture the meaning and emotion of the human voice. But instead of honoring the wise old man’s wishes, his young pupil Plato recorded his inspiration’s objections, using the very medium that Socrates was so set on strangling at its […]
by Mary Anderson Casavant on Jul 18, 2013We are swimming in a sea of data. In 2012, Facebook passed the one billion-user mark, 48 hours worth of new video was uploaded to YouTube every minute and Apple received their one-millionth app submission while the Android store listed more than 600,000 apps with more than 20 billion installs. These stats represent an incredible amount of online activity with a decent percentage attributed to a rise in smartphone and tablet usage. Fame and riches await those who can effectively capture and monetize even a small percentage of this activity. In April, Facebook announced that they were acquiring Instagram, a […]
