Recipients of 2015/2016 TFI New Media Fund Announced
Tribeca Film Institute (TFI), in partnership with Ford Foundation’s JustFilms initiative, has announced the grant recipients of the 2015/2016 TFI New Media Fund. Grantees were selected by an advisory board comprised of Just Vision’s Julia Bacha, director Malika Zouhali-Worrall (Call Me Kuchu), director-producer Sandi Dubowski (Trembling Before G-d), Google’s Lisa Steiman and Chicken & Egg Pictures’ Jenni Wolfson. The fund provides monetary grants and support to nonfiction, transmedia projects which tackle a social issue. TFI Sandbox Relaunches
A year and a half ago the Tribeca Film Institute launched the TFI Sandbox, an online resource for documentary transmedia projects with connections to the New Media Fund and other real-world resources. Since then the Sandbox has helped produce some amazing work, such as Elaine McMillion Sheldon’s Hollow, and last week the site received an upgrade, which you can check out here. The TFI New Media Fund issued its annual call for submissions today with a deadline May 5. From the press release: The TFI New Media Fund provides funding and support to non-fiction, social issue media projects that go beyond traditional screens—integrating video with content across media platforms, from video games and mobile apps to social networks and interactive websites. We’re looking for projects that activate audiences around issues of contemporary social justice and equality around the world and demonstrate the power of cross-platform storytelling and dynamic audience engagement. FilmAid Launches Multimedia Doc, Dadaab Stories
Dadaab lies in eastern Kenya, not far from the Somali border. The area hosts the largest complex of refugee camps in the world, with over 474,000 people, primarily Somalis, living in the combined Dadaab and Alinjugur camps, making it larger than Atlanta, Miami, Oakland, or New Orleans. The sheer size of the camp makes life difficult, causing most residents to stay there long-term as well; the camp has just turned 20, and many children have never lived anywhere else. Storytelling for Social Change at Facebook
Tuesday night Facebook hosted a panel discussion about social issue-oriented transmedia at their office in midtown Manhattan. The event was co-sponsored by the Tides Foundation, a San Francisco nonprofit that funds philanthropic ventures, and featured Beth Janson, executive director of the Tribeca Film Institute and representing its All Access program, Didi Bethurum of the social action campaign 10×10 and the documentary Girl Rising, Michelle Byrd of Games for Change, and Libby Leffler, Facebook’s Strategic Partner Manager who interfaces with nonprofits, charities, and philanthropic causes. TFI Sandbox for Documentary Transmedia
As transmedia has moved past its buzzword beginnings, resources and organizations have sprung up to support the creative community involved in multiplatform narratives. The latest of these comes from the Tribeca Film Institute, which last week launched an online hub for all things transmedia — particularly nonfiction — called TFI Sandbox. TFI NEW MEDIA FUND DEADLINE MAY 25
Supporting filmmakers who are delving into the medium of transmedia, the Tribeca Film Institute has currently opened submissions for its TFI New Media Fund. Seeking non-fiction, social issue media projects that are integrated across multiple platforms, four to eight projects will be accepted to receive $50,000 – $100,000 in funding.
