Visions du Réel 2023: Nights Gone By, Linda and Irina, This Woman, Chagrin Valley
Visions du Réel is so punctilious about its nonfiction festival identity that the program booklet explicitly labels the few titles not fitting that (honestly very broad) categorization as “Fiction,” a tag only deployed this year for sidebar retrospectives of Alice Rohrwacher and Lucrecia Martel. For myself, I wanted to attend less because of any particular predilection for nonfiction and more because VdR seems full of stronger iterations of a type of movie I tend to enjoy, roughly categorizable as “relatively well-financed art-leaning European (co)productions”—i.e., I was primarily interested for aesthetic reasons, with the filmmakers chosen for this year’s sidebars illustrative […]

PAM CUT Announces Honorees for 2023 Cinema Unbound Awards
Portland Art Museum’s PAM CUT // Center for an Untold Tomorrow has announced the honorees for the fourth annual Cinema Unbound Awards, which recognizes those working within the intersection of art and cinema. This year’s recipients are actor-comedian Fred Armisen, Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, chef Gregory Gourdet, writer Jon Raymond (who frequently collaborates with Kelly Reichardt, most recently on Showing Up), film scholar Jacqueline Stewart and actress Tessa Thompson. Prismatic Ground, the New York-based film festival that showcases experimental documentary and avant-garde works, kicks off this week. Spanning five days and six theaters, the festival will run from May 3-7 with screenings at the Museum of the Moving Image, Maysles Documentary Center, BAM Cinematheque, DCTV’s Firehouse Cinema, Light Industry and Anthology Film Archives. Sundance Institute Announces 2023 Fellows for Directors, Screenwriters and Native Labs
Today, Sundance Institute announces the 2023 fellows for its Directors, Screenwriters and Native Labs. 12 fellows will join this year’s Directors and Screenwriters cohort, while the Native Lab will support five fellows. The Native Lab, which supports Indigenous filmmakers developing feature films and episodic projects, will begin with an online portion that runs May 1-5 before continuing in-person in Santa Fe, New Mexico from May 8-13. Cannes Film Festival Reveals 2023 Short Film and La Cinef Selections
Over the past two weeks, the 76th Cannes Film Festival has announced its overall lineup, Directors’ Fortnight titles and even additional films to this year’s slate. Now, short films and La Cinef selections round out the 2023 festival, which will run from May 16-27. 11 shorts from 12 countries are represented in the 2023 short film competition, and The Short Film Palme d’or will be awarded by the Jury chaired by Hungarian filmmaker Ildikó Enyedi. Overlook Film Festival 2023: American Monsters and Final Musings (Matinee, The Tingler, The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster)
The last official day of Overlook arrived, and I was pleased to spend it watching a double feature of Joe Dante’s Matinee (a special 30th anniversary screening) and William Castle’s 1959 film The Tingler. The double header was programmed by Dante himself, and after the screening I was scheduled to conduct a 20-minute interview with the director. I’d seen Matinee before, and upon re-watch was struck again by how lush and detailed each aspect of the film’s production is. Tribeca Festival Unveils 2023 Short Film Lineup
Tribeca Festival announces today its 2023 short film lineup, which arrives shortly after feature film, TV and NOW programming was revealed last week. This year’s short film slate includes 76 titles across narrative, documentary, animation and music video categories. The Festival will run from June 7-18 in New York City. After previous announcements revealed the initial lineup for the Cannes Film Festival and adjoining Directors’ Fortnight program, several more titles have just been added to the mix. Tribeca Festival Reveals 2023 TV and NOW Lineup
Just a few days after the Tribeca Festival feature film lineup for 2023 went live, the TV and NOW slate have been announced. Featuring eight premieres of new series and two first looks at returning favorites, the Festival will run from June 7-18 in New York City. The standout among this year’s lineup is the world premiere of Full Circle, a six-episode miniseries directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Dennis Quaid, Claire Danes, Timothy Olyphant, Zazie Beetz, and Jharrel Jerome.
